Glossary of Art Print Terminology and Other Information

Limited-edition prints — high-quality reproductions of original art, signed and numbered by the artist. Offered for sale in a limited quantity, as the name implies. Historically, limited-edition prints have been lithographically printed, but with the advent of digital-printing technology, many limited editions are reproduced as giclées.

Artist's proofs — some limited-edition printings include a very limited quantity of artist's proofs, sometimes preferred by collectors due to the smaller edition size. There is no visual difference in the actual image  when compared to the standard limited-edition print within the same edition.

Giclée prints — high-quality, high-definition, digitally-produced prints, usually offered in very restricted editions. Giclées reflect current state-of-the-art reproduction capability.

Reproduction sizes — the dimensions listed with each print (for example, 18" x 25") is the trim size;  the first number listed is height and the second number is width.  The trim area includes the unprinted border area surrounding the printed image. Our smaller prints usually have a 1½" border on three sides and a 2½" bottom border. Larger prints have a 2" x 3" border.

Carolina ArtWorks uses the following terminology to categorize our print offerings:

Mini-prints — small economically-priced reproductions, usually not signed or numbered. A typical mini-print size is 8½ inches x 11 inches.
  Gallery prints
— prints that are small enough to display in limited space, but large enough to make a wonderful framed presentation. A typical gallery print is 13 inches x 18 inches.
  Traditional prints
— prints offered in sizes traditionally preferred by collectors, like 18 inches x 25 inches. Traditional-size prints typically approximate the size of the original painting.
  Mural prints
— very large reproductions, usually canvas giclées. Murals may be desired for large open areas  where cathedral ceilings or two-story entrance halls require large visuals. Typically available in very limited edition sizes.
